Does Staples price match? Who it matches, what proof it wants, and the 14-day refund
Staples has an in-store policy and a separate Staples.com policy. Here's who it matches, what you have to bring, and what it leaves out.

The short answer
Yes, with conditions. Staples says its stores will match the price on an eligible product sold in store or online by a qualifying competitor, or online at Staples.com, if you bring valid proof of the lower price. The product has to be identical, new and in stock. (Staples)
Staples also has a separate policy for Staples.com orders, with a different list of competitors and a different way to ask. Both are on the same page. (Staples)
In-store price match: the rules
Staples calls this its In-Store Price Match Guarantee, and says it is available in store only. (Staples)
- Identical product. Staples says the item must match on brand name, size, weight, color, quantity, model number and warranty.
- New and in stock. The item has to be new, in stock at the competitor at the time of your request, and available to buy at the lower price.
- Staples can verify. It says it can verify the competitor, the advertised price, the product specifications and the availability, and may decline the request if it can't.
- Service plans must match too. For products sold with a service plan, such as laptops and printers, the plan, provider and terms must all be identical.
- Pre-tax price. Staples says it matches the pre-tax price and won't override sales tax to match a competitor.
- Quantity requirements. If a competitor requires a certain quantity to get the lower price, you must buy the same quantity from Staples.
- One per product per day. Matches are limited to one qualifying competitor price match per eligible product per customer per day.
Which competitors count in store
Staples lists these in-store qualifying competitors: Office Depot/Office Max, Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon.com, FedEx Office and The UPS Store. It says it won't match marketplace products sold or shipped by third parties on a qualifying competitor's website. (Staples)
What proof to bring
Staples lists these forms of valid proof for an in-store match. (Staples)
- The competitor's offer. A printed advertisement, printed in-store signage, a picture of in-store signage, or an online offer on your mobile device, showing the price, model number and features of the product. You can also show the Staples.com price and product details.
- Screenshots and pictures. Staples says these are accepted if they include a complete description of the offer, such as the product specifications, the advertised price and the start and end dates, and if it's legible and verifiable.
- A sales receipt. For a refund after you've bought, a receipt for the eligible product dated within 14 days of your request, showing the price, model number and features.
The 14-day refund
If you buy an eligible product at a Staples store and tell Staples within 14 days that you found it at a lower price in its stores or at Staples.com, Staples says its stores will refund the difference. (Staples)
Staples.com price match
For orders on Staples.com, Staples says to contact Customer Services at 1-800-333-3330 and give them proof of the lower price. The policy lists these Staples.com qualifying competitors: Grainger, Office Depot/Office Max, Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon.com, Quill, WB Mason and Uline. (Staples)
- What to give them. The competitor's name and website, plus the product's price, model number and features.
- After you buy. Staples.com says to give your order number, dated within 14 days of the request.
- No screenshots. Staples says screenshots or pictures will not be accepted for Staples.com requests.
- Staples store prices. Staples.com says it won't price match Staples in-store prices on Staples.com orders, except for orders you pick up in store, where you can tell it within 14 days if you find a lower price in its stores.
What Staples excludes
Staples says these aren't covered by its Price Match Guarantee. (Staples)
- Warranties, postage, gift cards, phone cards and shipping services
- Tech services, passport renewal services and TSA PreCheck enrollment applications
- Promotional products and printing-related services such as direct mail, design, digital marketing, shredding, scanning and faxing
- Ad, price and typographical errors
- Products on closeout, clearance or liquidation, and out-of-stock products
- The value of a competitor's mail-in rebates, and any gift with purchase
- Holiday sale offers, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday
- Products offered to Staples Business customers
Custom print products have their own terms, including a separate list of competitors and proof such as a quote or invoice dated within 30 days. The policy page has the details. (Staples)
How to use this when you shop
- Match the details. Compare model number, size, color, quantity and warranty before you rely on a price. A lower price on a similar model won't qualify.
- Save the whole offer. If you use a screenshot in store, make sure it shows the specs, price and the offer dates.
- Check the date. For the refund, tell Staples within 14 days of buying, and keep your receipt, which must be dated within 14 days of your request.
- Look for sale type. Clearance and holiday offers aren't matched, so a sale price may not count.
