Does Amazon price match? What Amazon says, and what its prices mean
Amazon says it doesn't offer price matching. Here's what it does say about prices, the one price guarantee it has, and how to read its strike-through prices.
Updated October 28, 2026 · Everything below comes from three Amazon help pages, read on that date. The links are at the bottom. Amazon can change its policies, so check its pages before you rely on them.
The short answer
No. Amazon's "Pricing and Price Matching" help page says it does the work of comparing its prices to competitors that carry the same item, and that as a result it doesn't offer price matching compensation. (Amazon)
Amazon also says it offers all customers the same everyday low prices for products in its store and that it doesn't use your personal information to charge you higher prices. It says it prices many grocery items regionally and offers extra savings for Prime members and select customer discounts. (Amazon)
What Amazon offers instead of a price match
Amazon's page says its Alexa for Shopping assistant will share up to a year of a product's price history, let you set pricing alerts, and complete purchases at the price points you choose. (Amazon)
That is a different tool from a price match. It helps you decide when to buy. It doesn't compare Amazon's price to another store's after you've bought.
The one price guarantee: pre-orders
Amazon's "Pre-Order Price Guarantee" page describes the one case where a lower price after you order can reach you. It applies to not-yet-released items that show the "Pre-order Price Guarantee" message on the product page. (Amazon)
- Physical items: the price you're charged when it ships is the lowest price Amazon.com offered between the time you ordered and the end of the day of the release date.
- Digital games and software, Kindle books and Amazon Music: the price is the lowest Amazon.com offered between your order and the release.
- Refunds: if your order enters shipping before the release date and the price drops before the end of release day, Amazon says it will refund the difference to your credit or debit card within 48 hours. If the price changes before the item ships, you'll see the updated price in your account within 24 to 48 hours. If you didn't pay by credit or debit card, Amazon says to contact it.
Amazon lists limits too. It applies only to items sold by Amazon.com, not to other sellers on the site (other than certain digital music albums). It doesn't apply to items already released, to items that don't show the message, or to lower prices from any program you have to join to get the price. Amazon also says it may exclude a price that was temporarily stated in error.
How to read Amazon's strike-through prices
Amazon's "Strike-Through Pricing and Savings" page explains the crossed-out prices you see. (Amazon)
- List Price (also called MSRP) is the suggested retail price of a new product from a manufacturer, supplier or seller. Except for books, Amazon says it only shows a List Price if the product was bought on Amazon, or offered by other retailers, at or above that price in the past 90 days for non-seasonal items like TVs and headphones, and in the past 180 days for seasonal items like ski jackets and shoes. It adds that List Prices may not necessarily reflect the prevailing market price of a product.
- Typical Price is the 90-day median price customers paid for the product on Amazon. Amazon says it leaves out prices paid during limited-time promotions and prices in the Amazon Haul or Amazon Now stores. For Amazon Fresh offers it uses the median price offered locally in the last 35 days, excluding promotions.
- Lowest Price in XX Days means the current price is lower than, or equal to, the lowest featured offer price for that item sold on Amazon in the past XX days, such as 30.
- New Price is the current featured offer price for a new version of the item, shown as a strike-through on renewed offers. One-Time Price is the current featured offer price for a one-time purchase, shown as a strike-through on Subscribe & Save offers.
To report a strike-through price problem, Amazon says to click "Report an issue with this product or seller" on the product page.
How to use this when you shop
- Don't count on a refund for a later price drop. The Amazon pages cited here describe a refund for a lower price only under the Pre-Order Price Guarantee. They don't describe one for ordinary purchases.
- Know what the strike-through is. A "Typical Price" compares to what Amazon customers paid on Amazon, not to other stores. A List Price is the manufacturer's suggestion.
- Compare other stores before you buy. Amazon compares its own prices to competitors, but you can check them yourself.
- Know your return window. If a better price turns up after you buy, the options come from the return policy. See our guide to Amazon's return policy.
