October deals are tempting, but the return clock starts the day you buy. Here's how long Walmart, Target, Best Buy and Amazon give you, from their own policies.
Early holiday sales start in October now. Buying a gift early can lock in a good price, but there's a catch most people only notice in January: the return window. A gift bought in early October under a 15-day or 30-day policy may not be returnable by the time it's unwrapped.
Holiday return extensions fix some of that, but each store starts its extension on a different date, and some categories are left out. Here's what each store's own policy says, checked on October 7, 2026. Where a store hasn't posted its 2026 holiday dates yet, we say so and show last year's rule so you know what to watch for.
Walmart's standard policy gives you 90 days to return most items. The exceptions matter for gifts: consumer electronics bought in store have 30 days, and wireless phones bought in store have 14. Items sold and shipped by a Marketplace seller can be returned within 30 days. (Walmart)
The holiday rule on that same page: “Most items purchased in-store or online from October 1 through December 31 are returnable until January 31.” Marketplace sellers' participation varies. (Walmart) The word “most” is doing work there, so for an expensive electronics gift, check the return date on your receipt or order.
Target gives 90 days for most items it sells, and a full year for Target-owned brands with a receipt. Target Circle card holders get an extra 30 days on nearly all items. (Target, Target)
The exceptions are the popular gifts. Target says electronics and entertainment items must be returned within 30 days, and “All Apple® & Beats products (including mobile phones) must be returned / exchanged within 14 days.” Most items from Target Plus partners have 30 days. (Target) So AirPods bought in early October are past Target's standard window well before December.
One more Target perk: its Price Match Guarantee covers a lower Target price for 14 days after you buy, so if Target drops the price, ask for the difference. Our guide on which stores price match has the details.
Best Buy's standard return window is 15 days for most customers, and 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and Total members. Phones, cellular tablets, hotspots and cellular wearables have 14 days for most customers. Opened drones, cameras, projectors and some other items carry a 15% restocking fee, and opened activatable devices a $45 fee, except in states where Best Buy doesn't charge them. (Best Buy)
Best Buy's holiday page still showed last year's dates when we checked: purchases made October 31 through December 31, 2025 could be returned through January 15, 2026. Phones and other devices with carrier contracts, AppleCare+ plans and holiday decorations were excluded. (Best Buy) If 2026 follows the same pattern, a gift bought at Best Buy in early October only has the standard 15 days.
The upside: Best Buy will match its own lower price if it drops during your return period. (Best Buy)
Amazon publishes its holiday rule each season. For 2025, it said “most items purchased between November 1 and December 31 can be returned until January 31, 2026,” with Apple-branded items due back by January 15, 2026. (Amazon) When we checked on October 7, 2026, Amazon hadn't posted its 2026 holiday dates on its news site.
That means an October purchase, including one from this week's Prime Big Deal Days, falls under the normal return window for that item. The reliable way to check is to open Your Orders and look at the return-by date Amazon shows for that order, before the deal's excitement wears off.
An early purchase makes sense when the price is clearly below what other major retailers charge right now for the same item, and when the return window still gives you room. If the “sale” price matches what other stores charge every day, there's no reason to give up return time for it. Our guide on telling if a sale is actually a good deal walks through the check.
Price AI identifies the product from a photo or barcode, shows current prices from major retailers, and gives you a Deal Score from 1–100, so you know whether an early deal is worth buying now. When it can't identify something, it says so instead of guessing.
It depends on the store and the item. Walmart says most items bought from October 1 through December 31 are returnable until January 31. Target gives 90 days for most items, but only 30 for electronics and 14 for Apple products. Best Buy's standard window is 15 days for most shoppers, and its 2025 holiday extension started with purchases on October 31.
For 2025, Amazon said most items bought from November 1 through December 31 could be returned until January 31, 2026, with Apple items due by January 15. As of October 7, 2026, Amazon hadn't posted its 2026 dates. Check the return-by date in Your Orders.
Electronics, Apple products and phones. Target allows 30 days for electronics and 14 for Apple and Beats products and phones, Walmart allows 30 days for in-store electronics and 14 for in-store phones, and Best Buy allows 14 days for phones and other activatable devices for most customers.
