Target's return policy: 90 days for most items, 30 for electronics, 14 for Apple
How long you have to return something to Target, which items get shorter windows, what can't be returned, and how the Circle Card extension works, from Target's own help pages.
Updated October 22, 2026 · Everything below comes from Target's help articles "What's the return policy?" and "Are there any return exceptions?", both read on that date. The links are at the bottom. Target can change its policy, so check its pages before you rely on a return.
The short answer
Target says most unopened items sold by Target in new condition and returned within 90 days get a refund or exchange. For items bought on Target.com, the window starts when you receive them: when the order is delivered, delivered by a Shipt shopper, or picked up in store. (Target) Electronics have a shorter window of 30 days, and Apple and Beats products and mobile phones have just 14 days. (Target)
The windows, by item
- Most items sold by Target: 90 days. (Target)
- Target Owned Brand items: return within one year with a receipt for an exchange or a refund. (Target)
- Electronics and entertainment (excluding Apple and Beats): 30 days. (Target)
- Apple and Beats products, including mobile phones: 14 days. Phones bought in store or by Order Pickup are also 14 days. (Target)
- Items sold by Target Plus partners: most unopened items in new condition within 30 days. Some have shorter windows, and some are final sale. (Target) (Target)
- Holiday and limited-time-only collections: may have modified return policies. (Target)
- EBT card purchases made online: 90 days from the date shipped, delivered by a Shipt shopper, or made ready for pickup, which Target says SNAP requires. (Target)
The Target Circle Card extension
Target says Target Circle debit and credit card holders and Target Circle 360 members get an extra 30 days to return nearly all items bought with their Target Circle Card at Target and Target.com. Target points to Target.com/CircleCard for the full details and exclusions. (Target)
What can't be returned
Target lists these as final sale: (Target)
- Trading cards and trading card accessories, such as Pokémon cards, sports cards and binders.
- Open or defective collectibles, such as special edition Barbie dolls, porcelain dolls, action figures and die-cast cars.
- Personalized items and digital downloads.
- Opened or unsealed breast pumps.
- Specialty gift cards, pre-paid gift cards and Target GiftCards, which cannot be returned or redeemed for cash or credit except where required by law.
- Select items sold by Target Plus partners.
Exchange only if opened: music, movies, video games and software (for the same title, on the same or a different gaming platform), and airbeds (for a similar item). (Target)
Where to return certain purchases
- Items from Target Optical, Warby Parker, Pharmacy, Starbucks and Target Tech must be returned or exchanged at those areas. (Target)
- International purchases: Target stores cannot accept international returns or exchanges, including online purchases. (Target)
- Target Plus partner items must be returned to Target, in store or by mail. (Target)
Receipts and condition
Target says some items have a modified policy noted on the receipt, packing slip, the policy board in store, Target.com or the item description, and that items that are opened, damaged or have no receipt may be denied a refund or exchange. Returns and exchanges without a receipt may be limited. (Target) (Target) For Target Plus partner items, in-store returns without an eligible receipt will be denied. (Target)
Target also reserves the right to deny returns, refunds and exchanges, including in cases of fraud, suspected fraud or abuse. (Target)
Phones: fees and contracts
- A restocking charge of up to $35 for phones may apply except where prohibited. There is no restocking charge if the product is unopened. (Target)
- Phones bought with a carrier contract may be subject to early termination fees if returned or exchanged. Contract items and carrier plans must be returned in a Target store with help from a Target Tech Rep. (Target)
How to use this when you shop
- Count from the day you receive it, not the day you order. Put the date in your calendar.
- Check the category first. A TV is 30 days, an iPhone is 14 and a Target-brand sweater is a year.
- Keep the receipt. Target can deny items with no receipt, and a year on Owned Brand items needs one.
- Check the price before you buy. A long return window doesn't make a price good. Our guides on which stores price match and getting the difference back if the price drops cover Target, and holiday return policies compares it with other stores.
