Home Depot's online return policy: 90 days and the exceptions
How long you have to return a homedepot.com order, where you can return it, how fast the credit shows up, and what has a shorter window, from Home Depot's own pages.
Updated October 14, 2026 · Everything below is taken from Home Depot's online returns pages on that date. The links are at the bottom. This guide covers orders placed on homedepot.com; check Home Depot's in-store return rules separately.
The short answer
Home Depot says most products bought online can be returned within 90 days of purchase. A list of categories is excluded from that rule, and several of the big-ticket ones have a much shorter window: TVs, computers, furniture, generators and gas-powered equipment are listed at 30 days. (Home Depot) (Home Depot) If you're buying something expensive for a project or a gift, find your item's category in the list below before you assume you have three months.
Where you can return an online order
Home Depot lists three ways to return something you ordered on homedepot.com: (Home Depot)
- In a Home Depot store. Bring the shipment confirmation email, which has a barcode, or the credit card you used for the order. Home Depot also says your order confirmation email or packing slip makes the return easier. (Home Depot)
- By mail. Use the prepaid UPS return label that came with your order and drop the package at a UPS location or hand it to a UPS driver.
- Large or heavy items. Call Online Customer Care at 1-800-430-3376 (daily, 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. ET, closed Christmas Day) and Home Depot will arrange a pickup from your home.
Refund timing and shipping costs
A store return gets credit on the spot. A mail return is credited after the warehouse receives and processes the package. Depending on how you paid, the credit can take 2 to 10 business days to show up on your account. (Home Depot)
Store returns carry no return shipping charge. Home Depot says it refunds original and return shipping only if homedepot.com made an error, so a mail return may cost you the return shipping. Returned gifts get a Home Depot gift card instead of a refund to the original payment method. (Home Depot)
The exceptions: shorter windows and no-returns
Home Depot's exceptions list for online orders includes the following. (Home Depot)
- TVs and computers: return within 30 days of purchase.
- Furniture: return and report defects within 30 days of purchase.
- Generators: return and report defects within 30 days of purchase. Whole-house and stationary generators can't be returned or refunded.
- Gas-powered equipment and tractors: return within 30 days of purchase. John Deere tractors are repaired under the manufacturer's warranty instead.
- Major appliances: report damage within 48 hours of delivery at 1-800-455-3869. After 48 hours, take the issue to your local store's Special Services Desk with your sales receipt.
- Damaged or missing items in general: report within 30 days of delivery.
- Live goods (houseplants, perennials, trees, holiday trees, wreaths, garlands): report damage or death within 3 days of delivery for a free replacement. Perennials, trees and shrubs have a one-year guarantee. Cut flowers and floral arrangements are excluded. (Home Depot)
- Not returnable: gift cards, wallpaper, paint and flooring samples, custom products such as custom paint samples, and utility trailers. If you got the wrong sample, Home Depot says to call 1-800-430-3376 for a replacement.
- Products with flammable liquids or gases, such as lawn mowers and leaf blowers, can't be mailed back even if drained. Return them to a local store.
Keep your confirmation email until your return window closes; it's the document Home Depot asks for at the store.
How to use this when you shop
- Count 30 days for the pricey stuff. A TV, laptop, generator or piece of furniture bought online has a 30-day window, not 90. Put the date in your calendar when it arrives.
- Check the day the plants arrive. Live goods have only 3 days to report a problem.
- Don't assume a gift can go back for cash. A returned gift comes back as a Home Depot gift card.
- Compare the price first. A long return window doesn't make a price good. Compare the same item at other stores before you buy; our guide on how to price check in a store shows how in about 30 seconds, and which stores price match covers Lowe's, Walmart, Target and Best Buy.
